Are Bananas Safe for Diabetes and Prediabetes?

The numbers

A classic controlled study (Hermansen et al., Diabetic Medicine, 1992) measured blood glucose response to bananas at two ripeness stages in people with type 2 diabetes:

A medium banana has roughly 24 grams of available carbohydrate. At the under-ripe end, 43 × 24 ÷ 100 ≈ 10, a low-to-medium glycemic load. At the very ripe end, 74 × 24 ÷ 100 ≈ 18, medium.

Why ripeness moves the number so much

A green or under-ripe banana is high in resistant starch, a form of carbohydrate your body digests slowly and incompletely, much like fiber. As the banana ripens and the peel turns yellow and then spotted, enzymes in the fruit convert that resistant starch into simple sugars, which is also why a ripe banana tastes noticeably sweeter than a green one. The Hermansen study found blood glucose response over four hours nearly doubled between the under-ripe and over-ripe bananas tested, even though it was the same fruit.

Better choices

Choosing a firmer, less-spotted banana over a very ripe one is a simple way to soften the impact without giving up the fruit entirely. Pairing a ripe banana with protein or fat, like nut butter, eggs, or Greek yogurt, also helps, and eating half a banana instead of a whole one is an easy portion adjustment if a very ripe one is all you have.
